I think the debt was both ways -the debt the students owed the refugee intellectuals, and the debt the intellectuals owed to the colleges that took them in and the students they taught. This is true heroism in the darkest days, race relations at their best (and worst) but truth prevailed in the end. This story made my day, Heather!
